School of Diaconal Training Courses Descriptions
The History of the Diaconate
An examination of the ministry of the deacon in the early church. Attention is given to the relationship of the diaconate to other orders in the church, the reasons for the decline of the diaconate during the medieval period, and the renewal of the order.
The Order and Ministry of the Deacon
The theological and biblical foundations of the diaconate will be explored. The course will enable the student to understand the theology of the deacon as servant and to evaluate the experience of a personal call to the ministry of deacon.
Homiletics
Various approaches to the preparation, delivery, and critique of the sermon will be explored. Each student will have the opportunity to preach during the Eucharist on ICS Saturdays.
The Ministry of Pastoral Care
This course will provide a conceptual framework of the ministry of pastoral care. Major themes include: the purpose, process and styles of pastoral care and the person of the care-giver, pastoral diagnosis, care-giving traps, and when and how to refer.
The Deacon in Liturgy
This two-day course will acquaint the student with his/her function within the liturgy, in order to form a more comprehensive theology of the diaconate as seen in the liturgy.
The Deacon: In the Church and In the World
This class provides the students the opportunity to reflect on their call to the diaconate and their fieldwork experiences. They will also study the service for the Ordination of a Deacon as found in the Book of Common Prayer and share their hopes and concerns as they approach ordination.
Pastoral Care and Ministry
Life seems to become more complex every day. These workshops explore the ministry needed by families and friends as they seek healing and wholeness. Topics this year include ministry to the sick and their families, ministry with families and their pets, and community disaster preparedness. Lay individuals involved in pastoral care in the parish are encouraged to attend!
